About the Northern Premier League Divisions

NPL Premier Division

The Northern Premier League Premier Division sits at Step 3 of the National League System and serves as the top tier within the NPL structure. Established in 1968, the division features a selection of semi-professional clubs from across the North of England and the Midlands. Known for its competitive spirit and long-standing rivalries, the Premier Division plays a crucial role in the development of non-league football and progression towards the National League North.

NPL East Division

Introduced as part of the league's restructuring to improve regional competition, the Northern Premier League East Division operates at Step 4 of the National League System. The division brings together clubs from Yorkshire, Lincolnshire, Nottinghamshire, and surrounding areas. It has quickly established itself as a competitive and respected section of the NPL, providing clubs with a clear pathway for advancement and increased regional exposure.

NPL Midlands Division

The Northern Premier League Midlands Division, also at Step 4, was created to offer Midlands-based clubs a dedicated regional competition, reducing travel demands and fostering strong local rivalries. The division comprises clubs from Derbyshire, Leicestershire, Staffordshire, and surrounding counties, with many holding rich histories within English non-league football. It continues to be an important platform for player development and club progression.

NPL West Division

Serving clubs from the North West of England and North Wales, the Northern Premier League West Division completes the NPL’s Step 4 offering. Established to promote regional football and minimise travel distances, the division features a mix of historic non-league sides and ambitious emerging clubs. It plays an integral part in the league’s commitment to supporting grassroots football and offering clear routes through the football pyramid.
